PlayStation 2

The Sony PlayStation 2 is a console from the sixth generation of video game consoles. The console was launched in Japan on March 4th, 2000 followed by North America (October 26th, 2000) and Europe (November 24th, 2000). Two major designs (hiding a much larger number of models) were released in it’s lifespan: the “fat” and “slim”. An alternate device, called the PSX, was a combination PS2 and digital video recorder / DVD burner with the first usage of the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface that would later be on the PS3/PSP. There was also a TV with a poorly integrated PS2 released in 2010 — the Bravia KDL-22PX300.

PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a console from the seventh generation of video game consoles. The console was launched in Japan on November 11th, 2006 followed by North America (November 17th, 2006) and Europe (March 23th, 2007). Three major models were released in it’s lifespan: the “fat”, “slim”, and “super slim”. The launch models were equipped with full PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility via CPU/GPU chips onboard – with PS2 disc support later being removed from the hardware. Firmware version 3.21 removed the ability to run the Linux operating system, leading to lawsuits and increased pressure on the community to exploit the console to restore Linux. The PS3 was also the first console that supported Blu-ray discs for games and movies.
