Sony PlayStation 1 Controller (SCPH-1080) Complete Teardown Guide

What Tools Do You Need

Phillips #0 Screwdriver

Step 1 Always Be Safe

Be cautious when handling electronics, as some components can retain a charge for over an hour even after being unplugged. If you need to touch parts that may still hold a charge, always grasp them by the edges and avoid contact with any metallic surfaces or capacitors.

If your electronics were just unplugged, you should wait a bit before working on them.

Step 2 Remove the Screws Securing The Controller

Begin by flipping the controller over to access the eight #0 Phillips head screws that hold it together. Carefully remove these screws. Once the screws are out, gently pull the two halves of the controller apart, being cautious as some cables may still be attached to one side.

Step 3 Remove the Triggers

In the bottom half of the controller, remove the two #0 Philips head screws securing the trigger buttons. Then, tip them over to release.

Step 4 Remove the motherboard

Carefully lift the bumper buttons to detach them from the cable routing. Unwind the controller cable, and then lift the motherboard out.

Step 5 Disassemble the Trigger Buttons

To disassemble the trigger buttons, start by pushing the tabs together on the trigger buttons. This will allow you to pull the board off of the frame. Next, lift the carbon dot pad off to remove the button from the frame. To completely take out the button, push the tabs on both the top and bottom of the button together and then push it out.

Step 6 Disassemble the Top Half

Begin by lifting the carbon dot pads to access the D-pad, D-pad rocker, and face buttons. Carefully tip all of these components out. There’s no need to worry about marking their positions, as each piece has specific notches that ensure only the correct button can fit into its designated slot.
